Poetry. The true weight of these poems is held in a language grown from an experience of caring for another, caring for one self and caring for someone who desires no care whatsoever. When the caregiver in these poems is still a young girl, either her poems will filter out of this hardship or nothing else will come of it but some horrified silence.

This is a series of beautiful poems written with care and accessible, direct language and images. Her use of the natural world and personal tone allows these poems (often about loss) to relate to me and so many others I know. These poems gently connect to human experience that is sometimes difficult to understand or talk about. A remarkable book.Product details

Giving Way Shawn Fawson 9780978633530 Books Reviews
Recommended not only for adult readers, but for creative writing classes at the high school and college level, and for lit classes when introducing contemporary authors. To read Shawn Fawson's first full-length collection is to marvel at its devastatingly beautiful language and abundant moments of startling insight. They come at you like fleeting sightings of a rare bird or animal--the heart jumps and is awed into quietness. Her gift is to snap your heart as you're drawn in by the beauty, and she navigates grief and loss soft-voiced but with resilience.
I think the best aspects of her work are her unabashed commitments to beautiful arrangements of words, to thoroughly surprising choices of diction and metaphor. These sound like typical poetic achievements, but that's not the case. I think beauty is often abandoned in contemporary poetry in the pursuit of conceptual concerns. And that's fine, necessary even, but it's also necessary to see that beauty flourishes alongside it. That Fawson can speak of the personal in a way that is direct and pleasingly oblique, a mother with Alzheimer's, her work with terminally ill patients, for example, is appealing. Her knowledge of the natural world is commanding and used to great effect throughout the entire collection. Highly recommended.
From "North," a typical example of an observation shocked into vision
"After you were gone, there was a day when straggling wings
were caught on our front fence, sides torn, feathers buried
under snow--death as sudden as a truth I wanted to take heart in."
And towards the end of the poem, another example of her unexpected, luminous detours
"I keep remembering those wings, believe in the flight they must
make somehow trusting the blue while my hands worked the wire
to free their feet. I remember each wing flashing in and out
the way something is weighed down by not knowing
while another is lifted by what it cannot have."
